VoIP is a technology used to transmit voice in real time on a data network.
Through software algorithms or hardware devices called DSP (Digital
Signal Processor), the voice is compressed, fragmented and entered in
data "packages" transmitted on the net. In practice, VoIP exploits data lines for phone communication transfer.
There are several way to codify (or "codec") which are different according to the higher or lower compression of vocal signals.
In the same way, there are several vocal communication standards as H.323, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) and MGCP (Media Gateway Control Protocol). Those standards usually have different protocols for voice or signal flow transmission.
